Johannes Cosmopolitan Cuisine

196 South Indian Canyon Drive
Palm Springs
Phone 760-778-0017

Here's a good indication that you've come to the right place: accompanying the regular menu at this intimate European-influenced restaurant is an insert page summarizing brief, highly favorable reviews of this restaurant from around the country, including such prestigious critics as The New York Times, Bon Appetit, Travel and Leisure and others.

The warm yellow-gold walls of this intimate restaurant in the heart of downtown Palm Springs (approximately 20 tables) seem to recall the South of France rather than the Austrian origin of its owner and head chef, Johannes Bacher.

Johannes brings it all together in a beautifully presented meal. Yellow Beets as an appetizer? In balsamic syrup and an Austrian pumpkin seed sauce, it is sublime. Lobster in the mashed potatoes? It is a perfect accompaniment for crispy Atlantic Salmon. Johannes also offers an extensive by-the-glass wine list and an exceptional variety of imported and domestic beer.

Many Palm Springs visitors and full-time residents alike call Johannes one of the very best quality restaurants in the entire desert area. The owner-chef Johannes Bacher prepares some of the most interesting and innovative, mouth-watering, scrumptious, and eye-pleasing meals in the desert.

Dishes include amazing Wiener Schnitzel, Asian fusion dishes, incredibly tasty appetizers, delicious and innovative soups, great sauces, and mouth-watering desserts, this intimate restaurant is sure to please. The restaurant offers one of the best wine lists in the area as well as an excellent selection of wines by the glass.

About a dozen entrees include such elegant choices as herb marinated Australian lamb rack, grilled pineapple roasted potatoes, broccolini and candied orange glaze; crispy duck breast, sauteed spinach, truffle infusion bosc pear, star anise and plum sauce and crispy Atlantic salmon on braised bok choy, roasted tomatoes, Florida rock shrimp and yellow Thai curry sauce. Another entree is sliced beef tenderloin steak, root vegetables, mashed Yukon Gold potatoes, Danish buttermilk blue cheese and green peppercorn tarragon sauce.

Johannes' menu features entrees as "The Main Thing" with some very special of his trademark dishes listed under "A Bit of My Country," offering special selections from Johannes' European background.

A quick sampling of some of Johannes' favorites include smoked salmon, green beans, red beets, blood orange coulis and blood oranges and sliced pork tenderloin, green peppercorn sauce, pineapple sauerkraut with mashed potatoes.

The top seller by far for this inspiring Palm Springs restaurant is the wiener schnitzel, roasted potatoes, cucumbers in sour cream dressing and lemon cranberry jelly.

"Johannes combines tastes and textures that are often familiar but with original, even experimental, food combinations that make dining here a secure adventure," writes Maureen Daly, a food critic for a Palm Springs local newspaper.

Don't leave Johannes without tasting the tempting desserts: homemade desserts include old-time apple strudel with vanilla sauce; chocolate, almond and apricot bread pudding, cinnamon rum sauce.
